The Amazing March Into the Past

It seems today that politicians are openly espousing ideas now that were disproven a century ago.   For instance in the Creation Institute you have Adam and Eve co existing with dinasaurs six thousand years ago.  Now there is talk about bringing about the geocentric point of view and that the Catholic Church was right in comdemning Galileo and Copernicus.   Now in worship of the great god Two-Side you have the Truth acknoledged by scientists for decades, given equal weight with the nuttiest of right winder ideas now.  It's false equivelency and that's madness.  One caller on a morning talk show actually claimed that people who believed in Global Warming were of equalivent value to the Jim Jones Guyanna cult.  And when reminded by the host that "98% of serious scientists are in agreement as to the notion of man made Global Warming" the response was "Well - - 98% of Christians believe in Jesus Christ", which is about like saying that 98% of Mormons believe in Joseph Smith.   These people on the right seem to have lost all sense as to how to decide what is real and what is not.   It's crazy!

In terms of real Science today- - we have what I call the first "mass production bioptsy" or a microbe probe of- - industrial sludge for one thing, which can isolate by a new experimental process over a million different species of microbe in our industrial waste to test for a multitude of potential diseases which may affect society.  But such technology could obviously used with human beings to test whatever "dangerous microbes" are resident in their own bodies, which might cause harm.  And in the area of orthopedics- - now the dream of the old time Faith Healers is realized.  You have people with irreperably damaged spinal cords- - getting up and standing and even doing things like working out with weights and things.  So it keeps the patient more physically fit in the process.  There is some device you hook up to your nervous system and when the unit is on, you can perform wonders.  When the unit is turned off, you're right back where you were before.

The hypocracy of these Bible thumpers is more than apparent.  John Fugelsang has his own take on this on Friday's April 11th Stephanie Miller program.  I have perhaps a more "pragmatic take on the same thing, a concurring but different opinion, so to speak.  For instance one person got a tatoo on his body of a Bible verse in Leviticus or whatever that bans homosexual content.  Unfortunately a few verses later there is a ban against tatooing your body.  And if that guy was wearing a mixed cotton and polyester suit, again he is in trouble by mixing his fabrics in his clothing.  Now you hear people talking about "Being on the right side of history" being less important than "Being on the right side of the Bible".  Have these people learned nothing from reading through the four gospels?  The central message- - one of them anyhow- -is that "People can and are - - (hypothetically) being in perfect accordance with Biblical teachings and may pride themselves on their fidelity to both the letter and spirit of scripture and still be "On the Wrong side of History" as the Jews were in Jesus' day.  As such Mike Huckibee has a major lesson to learn here - - as to how someone be positive they're on solid ground on an issue "In your Heart, you know he's Right" and still get the historical "shaft" from God and History.  Nobody ever said God was Fair.  This is a human construct.  Whatever devotion the pharisees had about "The true spirit of the Law" didn't matter to God when he swept them all away.  I maintain having Laws is a good thing.  Nobody says for instance "We shouldn't have speeding laws because what if the speed laws were 25 mph on the freeway?"  But this is the identical logic Rush Limbaugh uses on minimum wage laws.  Abraham Lincoln said "No man is above the law - - and no man is beneath it".  Too many people forget this basic truth.  If you are going to - (for reasons we won't question just this minute) - - make Leviticus your law book- - then the least you can do is follow what's actually in it.  But it seems more important to these right wing posers to just say "I HAVE a copy of the law- - but that doesn't mean I follow it".  The Civil Rights law passed under LBJ - - gave LAWYERS the right to bring legal suits in Court.  The first three letters in Lawyer is - - LAW.   Contrary then to what they would have us to believe- - these tea party people have a disregard for "The Law" and as such want to reduce the right of the people to bring Civil Suits- - - because they say it's a boondoggle for "Lawyers".  In other words using that same logic- - - police should not arrest criminals- - because to actually DO what your job entails - - be it a lawyer or a cop- - is somehow "wrong' in the eyes of the tea party, for reasons unfathomable to me.

Rush Limbaugh obviously is not serious- - as the spokesman of the Republican Party- - about reaching out and trying to perswade people out there in radio land.  For instance some of the remarks about women are beyond tasteless- and downright tacky.  When Rush Limbaugh was told that there was some new museum or monument opening up to celebrate the accomplishments of women - - Rush said, "Oh, women already Have That - - they're called shopping malls".   He then makes sexual remarks about the women's movement- - - and told that joke twenty years ago about being in an elevator with Hillary Clinton and getting her to wash and iron his clothes "to prove she was a woman".   Now you have the Mitch Mc Conell race in Kentucky.  Clearly you will tailor the race in the fall depending on whether Senator Mc Conell wins or loses in his primary challenge.  If the Senator pervails against his tea party challenge- - the thing to do is to attack him personally.  Call him Yertle the Turtle- - and say that he's getting awfully old- - and is no longer politically relevent to the people of Kentucky.  If the tea party candidate loses- - the issue is simple.  Just pose it as a straight up referendum on the Political Issues of the day saying if you really go for all the far out tea party beliefs- - vote Republican.  But if you are like the Governor and actually are among those who LIKE your Obama Care and in other words want to join the 21st Century - - then you have to vote the democratic ticket.

In terms of Gerrymandering congressional districts, the answer is simple - - "It's the Geometry, Stupid".  There is no need to have endless debates about race and such and "deciding what is fair and since you can't come up with a good definition that is pleasing to all you might as well throw in the towel and let the victorious Party draw those district borders just as they always have.   Well there is a sensible solution that does not involve any "supreme court" decision of involved sociological study.  The solution is that ANY congressional district will be assigned a unit area of ONE.  And now for a square this would mean that the perimeter would be four times this Unit Value so there would be a four to one ratio right there.  But we're reasonable people.  I'd allow for an Eight to one Perimiter to Unit Area Value- - for a district.  This would be a completely color blind method of drawing the districts.  After all the liberals might like to gerrymander the minority districts so that things go Their way.  We have no need for any law that speaks of "Any districts ought to have this or that many minorities but no more than X percentage of them"  That would make it too complicated.  Just use my system.

Beware revisionism- - the scourge of the Texas Schoolbook distributors.  Now I'm hearing via tape delay about Jim De Mint and his revisionist history.   Now Jim De Mint says "All men are Created Equal" is in the Constitution and that it was "The will of the people" that Freed the Slaves, and had nothing to do with Big Government or the Civil War.   Has anyone ever heard the term "Progress" used with the words "Away" in the same sentence.  Jim says "The Democrats want to progress AWAY from those things that made America great".   I think inherent in the world "progress" is pro and gress meaning movement Foeward- - Tword a goal- - and not Away from any goal.  But if you have Adam and Eve frolicking with teradactyles - - then you're a lost cause anyhow.   You won't find the Truth that today's Republican party in Texas is composed primarily of those right wing Dixiecrats- - that transferred party membership in droves due to President Nixon's "Southern Strategy", which it could be argued itself is based on a racial premise.   These people- - revisionists will come out and say that Columbus was a good Christian who only sought to "Share the Christian gospel" with the native Americans he came accross.   He never raped them and he never exploited them or gave them diseases or outright slaughtered them- - according to these Columbus worshipers.  And don't get me started on William Bradford.   But people like Rush will say that anything other than total Personal Perfection in our sacred Historic Icons - - is some sort of- - I don't know - - Blasphamy against said Icon.
